How to avoid plagiarism: paraphrasing
EXAMPLE 4: PEER REVIEW OF THE INTRODUCTION OF A RESEARCH ARTICLE
The students who wrote the introductions and evaluated each other's work were 2nd year electrical and computer engineering and naval architecture and marine engineering students.
TASK DESCRIPTION
Students were asked to write the introduction section of a research article based on a topic of their interest. They were then asked to evaluate each other's work based on these criteria.
-
Find an engineering topic you are interested in.
-
Locate relevant sources (both books and research papers).
-
You will have to find at least 4 and preferably 7 sources for your topic.
-
Write a coherent text using information from your sources following the structure of information that pertains to the introduction section of a research articles.
-
The typical structure of the introduction section contains the following information:
-
Discuss the general research area.
-
Discuss the importance of research in that area.
-
Discuss key studies in the research area that have directly influenced the current work.
-
Identify the research gap.
-
Discuss the aim of the current study and how the authors have addressed the research gap.
-
Discuss the main findings and conclusions of the current study and some of its important implications (optional).
-
Your text should be 750-950 words (~2 pages, 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman).
You must:
-
Paraphrase and summarise appropriately. You must not plagiarise!
-
Cite your sources appropriately.
EVALUATION
The video contains extracts from a discussion between two students who evaluated each other's introductions based on specific criteria.
Extracts from the students' written work are shown below.
STUDENT ANSWER 1
Title : Wave Energy and Power Exploitation: European Countries and India
INTRODUCTION
Energy derived from wind and sun appears to be very popular but expensive as well [1]. The blue ocean is believed to be an alternative source of energy, considering that it covers the 2/3 of the earth’s surface [2]. This remarkable power source is free and quite easily accessible and if combined with wind and solar energy sources it can provide a neat and reliable energy supply [2,3]. Particularly, ocean waves provide energy which is environmentally friendly and without risks to human health while using non-complex equipment [1,3]. In addition to its natural source, it is stable [2], non-stop throughout the year and easily accessible even to very distant areas. However, further technological innovations are in progress to improve the exploitation of this type of energy source [1]. The application of such equipment from different countries will be discussed.
STUDENT ANSWER 2
Title : 5G Deployment

INTRODUCTION
In the last decades, information and communication technologies (ICT) have expanded our abilities in diverse fields. Previous technologies (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and LTE) enabled global mobile telephony (MP) and wireless services [1]. Nowadays, the deployment of an enhanced wireless network technology is necessary, due to the massive data growth. By 2030 there will be a 100 billion Internet of Things (IoT) connections and mobile data will have increased by approximately 20.000 times compared to 2010 [2].
The fifth-generation of mobile networks (5G) is designed to serve the expected data demand and support diverse use cases. Its deployment process has been thoroughly investigated by the scientific community, regarding the main usage scenarios, resources management, and signal-transmission technologies. The high requirements of 5G on energy-efficiency, capacity and coverage form a great challenge concerning its deployment.
